Auditions are open to all high school seniors and current college students considering attending EMU as a Music Education/Music Performance Major or Minor.
You need to see the Department of Music and Dance general info on auditions
Degree programs and their requirements
What do you need to know about auditions?:
- You must audition the sememster BEFORE you plan on attending the music program. If you want to attend EMU in Fall '06, you must audition in Fall '05/Winter '06. If you plan on attending the school of music in Winter '07, you must audition in Fall '06 or before.
- The most basic college percussion audition consists of a timpani piece, a snare drum solo (concert or rudimental), and a 2-4 mallet piece. Each should be about 1.5-2 minutes in length.
- You can audition with other instruments as well, such as drumset or cymbals.
- Be prepared to sightread on anything
- be prepared for timpani tuning, scale playing in all major/minor keys; 2.3 octaves.
- A short interview will be included with the audition.
- Bring an extra copy of all your music
- Memorization is not required, but could be a good demonstration of your memorization skills and how well you know the piece
- You will be required to do a small theory and aural skills exam
- You can take the PIANO PLACEMENT EXAM to be placed in a higher level piano class. Should you pass out of all of them, you will be enrolled in APNO, or piano lessons of a half-hour once a week.

Remember to practice performing! Get comfortable playing in front of other people and don't be afraid to ask fellow musicians for constructive comments. Get in the habit of establishing a daily practice routine that will get you warmed up and excersize your technique and musicality. Get to really KNOW your pieces-- every dynamic, phrase beginning and end, every word/symbol marking colour and tempo. Don't practice mistakes. Practice short passages and work them out and then connect it to the next/previous passage. RELAX! Don't over or under-think. Keep your mind focused.
Arrive early for your audition and warm up. Remember to take time just to breath and focus your mind. Dress professionally. If you make a mistake during your audition, keep going! Don't lose focus. Get lost in the music, and I don't mean your place. Good luck!
